Mission & Purpose
Continuum is an independent physics organization founded by a UCLA physics student with experience in physics outreach, academic programming, and event execution, with early collaboration from UC Berkeley students. Continuum at UCLA is a registered student organization established for administrative and funding purposes, while the parent organization, Continuum, oversees its broader initiatives.

Continuum is built around the idea that physics can be communicated clearly without sacrificing depth, regardless of audience background. We believe the most effective way to make physics accessible is through fast-spreading, dense, and accurate information, open to a large array of people. This includes curating initiatives that naturally encourage intellectual engagement and hold prestige, which increases participation and the quality of applicants.
One such initiative is Physics Slam, a selective scientific communication competition that emphasizes clarity, insight, and depth in the explanation of physics. Physics Slam positions scientific communication as a marker of mastery, recognizing students who demonstrate both deep technical understanding and the ability to articulate complex ideas with clarity. The competition is designed to challenge participants to communicate sophisticated physical ideas with precision and intellectual honesty, while remaining accessible beyond narrow subfields. In doing so, it addresses the persistent perception of physics as unapproachable or reserved for insular academic circles.

More broadly, Continuum promotes high-level physics being communicated to a general but intellectually engaged audience, without sacrificing rigor. This approach aligns with the core values of science, as access to clearly articulated ideas is essential for innovation, critical inquiry, and meaningful progress. Through its initiatives, Continuum recognizes and elevates students who can distill complex physical concepts into clear, compelling explanations, advancing how science is understood, shared, and trusted beyond the classroom.
